NM2208: Assignment 1 (Design Process)

Sketch #1: My inspiration for this sketch came from my recent obsession with dental care.  Basically, my name is formed with dental floss.

Sketch #2: I enjoy both listening to and creating music.  Thus, I tried incorporating the two elements ‘listening to music’ with and ‘creating music’ in this sketch.  The earphones and headphones reflect ‘listen’ and, the quaver, microphone (which is upside down) and piano keyboard reflect ‘creating’.

Sketch #3: This sketch reflects my “OCD-ness” (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) or rather, my constant need for perfection, tidiness and order.  I drew a background that made it seem like a piece of graph paper.  Notice that each alphabet of my name only takes up (22 x 6) squares.  I added measurements (The 1cm, 3cm, 11cm measurements at the edges of my name) to further accentuate this characteristic of mine.  Attempted to colour each section of my name with extremely straight lines (again, to reflect my OCD-ness), but I did it free hand, so that explains the not so straight lines the sketch.

Sketch #4: I visited Beijing last year and fell completely in love with the place.  Thus, this sketch is basically one that consists of the few things I saw when I was there.  I’m not too sure if anyone can see the alphabets but the Temple of Heaven on the far left represents ‘A’.  The entrance like thingy represents ‘n’.  The shoe with a weird creature’s head sticking out represents ‘D’.  The tree represents ‘r’.  The rectangular thing is a Chinese ancient-like door that represents ‘E’ (I tried to highlight the ‘E’ by making the lines thicker).  And lastly, the White Pagoda Temple represents another ‘A’.

After some consideration, I felt that Sketch #1 had the most room for further development and decided to go with it.  Below are the two full roughs that I came up with.

Full Rough #1

Full Rough #1: I was trying to show a mirror reflection and that’s why you see a black frame at the edges of the sketch.  I added a face and and hand to make it a little more interesting.  The dental floss is wrapped around my finger and I’m basically trying to pull the floss out of the box and through my teeth to form my name.  Just so you know, the floss in between my teeth is suppose to form an ‘r’.

Full Rough #2

Full Rough #2: This sketch is to show the extensiveness of my obsession with dental care.  Besides dental floss, there’s mouthwash and tooth paste as well.  However, the main focus of the rough still revolves around the floss forming my name.
